Neil Keen on Sonic Weld short track racing frames in 1968

In 1968, Neil Keen (10) made history as the first rider to receive Sonic Weld frames from his long-time friend, Ray Hensley. A pioneer in the racing world, Neil’s two DT1 short trackers were built with twin-loop frames, originally designed with narrow-case Ducati engines in mind. With a few tweaks, those frames could have easily accommodated the Ducati engines by using different mounting plates.

The photos here take us back to the Sturgis Short Track on a Saturday night in 1968. Neil Keen didn’t just race — he dominated, winning the event with ease and leaving his mark on the track and in racing history.
